Miriam Elizabeth Rodríguez Martínez lived in San Fernando, Tamaulipas. In January 2012, her 20-year-old daughter, Karen, was kidnapped while driving home by members of the Los Zetas cartel.
Miriam and her family paid the ransom, hoping Karen would return safely. But she never came home.
For two years, Miriam searched for answers. In 2014, she discovered the heartbreaking truth: Karen's remains were found in a hidden grave at an abandoned ranch.
Instead of giving up, Miriam decided to find the people responsible herself.
With little help from authorities, she began her own investigation. She changed her appearance, used fake identities, and even disguised herself as a healthcare worker and a pollster to gather information. She followed leads, tracked suspects, and secretly watched locations where criminals were hiding.
Step by step, Miriam found all ten people connected to her daughter's kidnapping and murder. She helped authorities arrest them.
Her courage did not stop there. She founded the San Fernando Collective for the Disappeared, an organization that helped around 600 families search for their missing loved ones.
But her fight came with a terrible cost.
On May 10, 2017 — Mother's Day in Mexico — armed attackers entered Miriam's home and shot her twelve times. She died while being taken to the hospital.
Miriam's story became a symbol of a mother's love, determination, and courage. Even after losing her daughter, she spent her life fighting so other families could find answers.
